Actuarial Club Officer Elections 2020 (Virtual)

It is time for one of the most anticipated events of the year - Annual Club Officer Elections! With the restrictions and guidelines surrounding COVID-19, this year’s elections will be held virtually but will still provide you with the same opportunity to run for a position, share your ideas and make a difference in the Actuarial Science community!

Previously, elections consisted of an initial vote for each officer position, followed by a runoff between the top two candidates (if necessary) to make sure the elected officer got a majority of the votes. Candidates could run for a maximum of two Vice President positions along with the ability to run for President. Each candidate gave a short speech before the vote (1 minute for Vice President or 1.5 minutes for President), and got to give an additional 30-second response if they were part of a runoff. If a candidate won a position, they were automatically taken out of the running for any later positions.

Virtual Elections for 2020

This year we have a new election system that tries to uphold our usual standards while navigating the challenges brought by virtual elections.

Election eligibility and requirements

  • Candidate must be a dues-paying member for the year 2019-2020

  • Candidate must be on-campus for the entire 2020-2021 academic year. Each officer position is a year-long commitment. Members studying abroad, going for full-time internships roles during the semester or taking the semester off for any reason are not eligible to run.

  • Candidate must fill out the Candidacy Form

    • Election eligibility will remain the same: candidates can run for the Presidential role (if eligible*) and up to two Vice President roles

    • Candidates must rank their preference if running for multiple positions

  • Candidate must submit videos of themselves giving speeches for EACH position they decide to run for

    • 1.5-minute speech for President

    • 1-minute speech for VP Positions

    • Ex. If Manish decides to run for VP Finance and VP Communications position, he must submit two separate 1-minute videos; 1-minute speech video for the VP Finance position and a 1-minute speech video for the VP Communication position. If Manish is only running for VP Communication, then he should only submit the speech video for VP Communication.

*In order to be eligible to run for president, the candidate must have been a dues-paying member of the club for at least 3 semesters (current semester included). Prior leadership experience within the club or another student organization is highly recommended.

Speech Submissions

  • All speeches must be submitted to actuarialclubuw.elections@gmail.com. Please email speech videos as an attachment or share the link to a cloud/ google drive. Reach out to Lakch (lsaraf@wisc.edu) if you have any difficulties with submissions.

  • Videos should adhere to the time-limit (1.5 min for President, 1 min for VP). Candidates may go over a few seconds but not too much more. Please ensure decent video quality.

  • Speech deadlines are:

    • Wednesday, 22nd April - 11:59 PM for the President position

    • Saturday, 25th April - 11:59 PM for Vice President positions

  • In the event of a runoff between the top two candidates for a certain position (read rules below), those candidates must submit an additional 30-second video in response to the runoff question that will be provided. Deadline to submit the runoff response videos will be:

    • Saturday, 25th April - 3 PM for the President position

    • Tuesday, 28th April - 3 PM for Vice President positions

Election Process

  • Voting for the President position will take place from 12 PM, 23rd April (Thursday) to 11:59 PM, 24th April (Friday)

  • Voting for the VP positions will take place from 12 PM, 26th April (Sunday) to 11:59 PM, 27th April (Monday)

  • Voting will take place through google forms which will be shared via the newsletter right before voting starts.

Each voter will select their top two choices for each position - a first choice and a second choice

  • The first choice selection will go into an initial vote. If any candidate receives a majority ( more than 50% votes) of the total first-choice votes, they win that position

  • If no candidate reaches a majority in the first-choice votes, all but the top two candidates will be eliminated, and we will look at the second choice votes from the candidates who were eliminated in an adjusted vote.

In this example, no candidate won an initial majority vote.  As a result, the last place candidate Goldie Gopher was eliminated, and the second choice of the voters (whose first choice was Goldie Gopher) came into play. The example voter, for instance, had their vote (second choice) count towards Bucky Badger in the adjusted runoff vote. The idea is that we can get the results of a runoff without unnecessarily enforcing voters to vote a second time.

  • If however, no candidate receives a majority even after the adjusted votes, we will have a runoff election between the top two first-choice candidates.

  • If necessary, a runoff vote will take place immediately after runoff video submissions are due (3 pm) until 11:59 pm of the same day.
